Getting Here
If you are in Northern California, drive here. We are located 1 hour and 45 minutes north of San Francisco (without traffic). If you are coming from further away (we have clients come from all over the country and many from Canada and abroad) plan to fly into San Francisco International Airport (SFO) or Sonoma County Airport (STC), which is best for west coast travel and only 50 minutes away. Unless you are planning to rent a car, Sacramento and Oakland are not good airports to fly into because they don't offer shuttle services.
From San Francisco Airport:
Option One: Rent a car and drive about 2.5 hours north of SFO—we'll send you detailed driving directions.
Option Two: Take a shuttle to Sonoma Airport, which is just north of Santa Rosa; the cost is $32 one way. The shuttle leaves every hour and we'll pick you up at Sonoma Airport for $50 each way. We are a 50 minute drive from Sonoma Airport. For shuttle information visit Airport Express.
FAQs
Do I need a car?
You don't necessarily need a car. If you want the freedom to explore the area and come and go on your own schedule then you will want a car. Many guests come without cars and we are happy to take you to Harbin Hot Springs and nearby hikes.
What does a typical day look like?
It depends what type of retreat you choose (basic or holistic) and on your personal preferences. We will have a meeting upon your arrival to help map out your retreat (some of this will also happen on the phone when we discuss your retreat).
Your personal retreat schedule will offer you plenty of time for being alone, some time for group classes or trips, and, if you book Holistic Healing Retreat, one individual healing session per day.
Here's a sample schedule:
8:00am - 9:30am: Yoga/Meditation
9:45am: Breakfast or Juice
10:30am - 1:30pm: Private one-on-one session (if on a holistic retreat) or use of pool, infra-red sauna, hikes, trips to Harbin Hot Springs, reading, watching spiritual/education DVDs, or simply relaxing by the creek, pool or fireplace (in the cooler months)
11:00am: Juice (if on the juice plan)
1:00pm - 2:00pm: Lunch or Juice
3:00pm: Juice (if on the juice plan)
2:30pm - 7:00pm: Private one-on-one session (if on a holistic retreat) or use of pool, infra-red sauna, hikes, trips to Harbin Hot Springs, reading, watching spiritual/education DVDs, or simply relaxing by the creek, pool or fireplace (in the cooler months)
6:00pm - 7:00pm: Juice or Dinner
Evening: Rest and relaxation, watch DVDs, trip to Harbin for free-form dancing, classes, etc.
You can add on many other options such as tennis, badminton, hula hooping, other types of healing sessions from our spa/healing page, board games, collage making, art, journaling, tarot readings, raw foods prep class, raw chocolate making class or just do nothing and be.
What is the difference between a basic and a holistic retreat?
The Basic Retreat includes all lodging, juices or meals, organic liquid supplements and rainforest herbs, use of infra-red sauna, morning yoga/exercise and meditation program, mindfulness walks, guided hike to waterfalls or nearby mountains.
The Holistic Healing Retreat package includes all of the above plus visits to Harbin Hot Springs, Clarity Breathwork and Spiritual Counseling/Life Coaching, massage and aquatic bodywork sessions. (For more information on these healing services, visit our Spa & Healing Services page.)
The Personal Retreats page has more detailed information.
How many sessions do I get with a Holistic Healing Retreat Package?
You get one less session then the amount of days you schedule. For example, on a 7-day retreat you get 6 sessions; on a 3-day retreat you get 2 sessions. The sessions that are included are: 1 hour and 30 minute massage/bodywork session, and/or a 1 hour and 15 minute Watsu/WaterDance session, and/or a Biodynamic Craniosacral session, and/or a 2 hour Clarity Breathwork with Spiritual Life Coaching Session, and/or a 1 hour Counseling session, and/or a Nutritional Counseling session. You would rotate these sessions during your retreat. You can add on additional session from our Spa/Healing Services page for additional costs. You can also substitute one bodywork session for Colonic or Foot Reflexology with Ionic Bath Detox.
How many people are at a retreat at a time?
We are a small, intimate retreat where you can enjoy peace and tranquility of nature. We have 1 to 7 people at a time.
Do you have wifi and cell phone use?
There is no good cell phone reception at the property. You can still get some reception in some areas. There is also an area with wifi, that could be available, if you really need an Internet connection. However we strongly recommend that you take a break from your computer and cell phone to experience a deeper retreat for yourself and respect others on retreat.
Do you have television in the room?
We don't have television in your rooms to invite you to enjoy quiet reflection and the silence of your being. We do have a DVD player and a small library of spiritual and selected mainstream movies.
How far are you from Harbin Hot Springs?
We are a 10 minute drive from Harbin Hot Springs.
What do I need to bring?
We will send you a list once you sign up.
How do I prepare for my juice fast retreat?
It is great to start eliminating processed foods, alcohol, sugar, meat, dairy and wheat from your diet in preparation for your cleanse. Eat more vegetables and fruits.
Can I do half juicing/half eating?
Yes, if you would like to split up your retreat and do half fasting and half eating we can arrange that. It is best to schedule this in advance.
What if I get hungry on the juice fast?
We serve five large glasses of juice a day, liquid supplements, unlimited tea and water. Most people feel quite full and do not get hungry and feel lighter with more energy then when eating since the digestive process normally consumes a lot of energy. Some people, on the first or second day, have a temporary sense of hunger because the organism is conditioned to want food and have a full feeling in the belly. This usually passes quickly. If you need extra nourishment, we can add blended raw green soups and miso broth.
Will I have support to come off my fast and retreat?
Yes, we will help you to come off of your fast with an hour or so meeting to look at your diet and nutritional needs, how to come off your fast slowly, what foods to eat, etc... with time for questions & answers. We will also provide you with a booklet including list of resources and information to support you in continuing healthy habits in your daily life.
What is a raw foods diet?
Raw foods are foods that are unprocessed, not heated over 110 degrees and contain live enzymes and all nutrients. Some people imagine a raw foods diet as a carrot and a stick of celery on a plate! They are completely surprised to discover our gourmet, delicious meals prepared daily by our professional chefs. We serve raw pizzas, pastas, sushi, falafel, neat burgers, soups, granola, smoothies, nut milks . . . We use soaked & sprouted nuts and grains, we dehydrate and make crackers, pizza crust, tortillas. We serve excellent desserts including raw chocolate, cheesecakes and apple pies. (You can see photos of some of these dishes on our Personal Retreats page.)
Do you have hiking trails on the property?
We are on 280 forested mountain land with many hiking trails and nature walks with beautiful views of the mountains. We also have many beautiful hiking trails within a short drive including gorgeous waterfalls and Table Rock where you can see expansive views over the Calistoga Valley. Harbin Hot Springs also has many wonderful hikes.
Do you have a raw food preparation and juice making class?
Yes, we can schedule that for you for an additional fee.
I see that you offer Spa Services. What should I expect?
If you expect a luxurious retreat and spa treatments, this may not be a right place for you. Although we provide comfort, and we also offer spa services, the main emphasis in our approach is on personal transformation, holistic healing and spiritual awakening. The retreats take place in the forest and the terrain is rugged at many places, offering a sense of being in the pristine and wild mountain environment.
Do you provide a space and supplies to do art?
Yes, there is an Art Studio in the forest cabin providing good light and privacy. There are some art supplies available and you may also bring your own.
Do you have a library?
Yes, we have an extensive library located in a separate 5 room cottage offering hundreds of books on psychology, spirituality, self-growth etc. It's an ideal facility for a writer's retreat or simply for reading, meditating or journaling.
